Last weekend saw the world's best young engineers compete in Europe's most established educational motorsport competition; IMechE Formula Student 2015. The event took place at the iconic Silverstone circuit and saw 135 teams compete, with 49 teams entering from the UK and international representation from as far afield as Australia, Turkey and Ukraine.

Jonathan Lee Recruitment is a proud sponsor of the University of Warwick’s ‘Warwick Racing’ team and at this year's event, Ed Roe, Sophie Theen, Jon Bryan and Paul Branton from the Jonathan Lee automotive division were there to show our support and to watch the team prepare for the challenges of the competition. As you can see above, the team were also privileged enough to get up close and personal with the car built by the Warwick Racing team!

Jon Bryan, Recruitment Consultant for Automotive Manufacturing, commented:
“We had a fantastic day at Formula Student which was really well organised by the IMechE. It was great to meet the team members from the University of Warwick, whom Jonathan Lee Recruitment is very proud to sponsor. We visited on Friday where the team was busy preparing for Scrutineering, which involved a number of demanding tests for the teams.”

The competition is comprised of eight categories with points allocated for each. These include tests to assess acceleration, endurance, fuel economy, vehicle design and a business presentation. Backed by industry and high profile engineers, the competition aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers.

Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car in order to compete in a series of static and dynamic events, which demonstrate their engineering understanding and test the performance of the vehicle. The event was eventually won by the electric car from the Delft University team, who took the top spot for the second year running.

Jonathan Lee Recruitment has been a sponsor of the Warwick Racing team for the past four years, supporting the extra-curriculum 4th year engineering project run by the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick and supported by their School of Engineering

The Warwick Racing team commented:
“The IMechE Formula Student competition at Silverstone last week was a great learning curve for the team. Unfortunately, we were unable to successfully pass Scrutineering in time for the dynamic events, thus were unable to compete in Acceleration, Skid Pan, Sprint, or Endurance. This was due to a number of minor faults over the week, culminating in a pedal box mount failing early Sunday morning in brake test, rendering the competition over."

The team successfully completed their static events, placing:
12th - Business Presentation
47th - Cost and Sustainability
57th - Design

“This led to a finish of 57th overall, 19th in the UK, with 171.9 points. We are back at the workshop today, busy making plans for how to perform more successfully at Formula Student Germany e.V. in a couple of weeks, and learn from the experience gained at Silverstone.

The team would like to thank everyone for their support this season. We will be releasing a fully detailed report of the UK and Germany competitions once we are back from Hockenheim in August.”
