Last week, Jonathan Lee Recruitment Automotive team members, Rachel Shilton and Kevin Harris, attended the last of the 2014/2015 IMechE Coventry Young Member Panel (YMP) lectures. The event, which was sponsored by Jonathan Lee Recruitment, heard the unique story behind the new Jaguar Lightweight E-Type with attendees even able to get a glimpse of the new £1 million supercar.

Six brand-new Jaguar Lightweight E-types are being meticulously built by specialist engineers, highlighting the capability and expert engineering skill set of the new Jaguar Heritage Workshop. The ‘Special GT’ E-type cars were originally built in 1963, but only 12 of the projected 18 were ever made.

Eighteen months ago Jaguar Heritage, a division of Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations, set out to build the six remaining Lightweight E-Types. Fifty years later, Jaguar is looking to complete the original production run of the ‘Special GT E-Type’, even carrying the original series chassis numbers of the ‘missing’ six vehicles.

The coveted next generation specification of the Jaguar Lightweight E-Type includes an aluminium bodyshell and aluminium racing engine and has been assembled to exacting standards at Jaguar’s Browns Lane plant for Historic FIA racing. With the first production car now finished, attendees were shown never before seen photos and video of the build process and testing of these £1 million historic supercars.

The event provided a great way to end this year’s series of lectures. We look forward to support next year’s events and the excellent work of the IMechE Coventry YMP.
