Jonathan Lee Recruitment are always delighted to have the opportunity to support young talent and to help the next generation of engineers to choose and secure the best career opportunities in the future.  This week, our team attended the University of Birmingham’s Summer Skills Programme 2015, organised by the Careers Network team for undergraduates in the College of Engineering & Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

David Powers and Sarah Davies from Jonathan Lee Recruitment delivered a presentation to 22 undergraduates, providing insight into how the recruitment industry interacts with graduates and also provided a CV workshop to engineering and science students.

David commented:  “The Summer Skills programme is a valuable event for first and second-year students to start them thinking about how to get a job after they gain their degrees. Having a careers programme with both the depth and relevance of this one is a credit to the careers team at  Birmingham University and hopefully a huge benefit to the participants.”

For third year students, the programme offered pointers on how to prepare for the job market in terms of CV writing, using job boards and other resources and also helping them to understand what recruitment consultancies do and how such companies can be beneficial to their success in securing a fantastic graduate role.

David and Sarah also discussed ways that the students can make their CVs stand out in a market that sometimes seems saturated by fresh graduates.  Sarah added “We really enjoyed meeting and engaging with the students and gaining some understanding of their concerns and fears regarding moving on from full-time education without having secured employment. It was a great opportunity to impart advice and provide guidance to the next generation of engineers!”
